I signed on today fully prepared to write a review of the Modern Skirts show at the 40 Watt last night. But I just remembered something that I think is a bit more important than spouting my opinions of the opening acts (The Empties rock!) and the sound quality (better in back).
Yes, that socially awkward thing that USED to happen at shows like these. Last night, while the Empties were playing, two guys in the crowd started jumping up and down and actually dancing. Not just the bobbing thing that most of us do.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t dancing a big part of the Athens scene in the late 70s/early 80s? I mean, the B-52s were (and still are) a dance band. Pylon and those other guys were primarily people movers too for a while. So what the hell happened?
I really must have been overlooking this during my time here. I find it kind of sad that we feel like dancing is something that we cannot do unless we’re properly trained.
“I can’t dance.” Um, more than likely, you can. Can you dance in a series of really cool looking moves that will leave the band and the crowd in awe? Probably not. But that foottapping you’re doing, that’s your starting point. Get moving! So what if it ends up on youtube? You’re probably already on there in some capacity. Might as well be having fun.
In a lot of other cultures, music and dancing go together like peanut butter and jelly. So thank you two random strangers who danced. Maybe the enthusiasm will catch on and Athens will dance again.
