Perfect Circle: An R.E.M. Post

Well, it’s no secret that Murmur, R.E.M.’s debut album is 25 years old. Neither is it really secret anymore that they’re releasing a two disc special edition of the album to commemorate the day. And now this event will no longer be secret.

There’s a cd release party for the anniversary edition, as is R.E.M.’s tradition since “Automatic”. What’s different about this one is that 1) It’s a re-release 2)It’s an Athens bands play thing (like the “Finest Worksongs” event a while back) and 3) I will not be missing this one.

Seriously, I went to REM Live’s release, to Accelerate’s party, but I was not in town that fateful night that the boys (with Berry!) played the 40 Watt. My body aches from kicking myself so much.

Just wondering how the hell this is going to go. That’s a lot of bands playing a few songs. Last time there was about three songs per band but the hell with it. I’m a shiny happy person for it.

Anywho, a clip from that night and the official announcement below….

Thanks to Jeff Montgomery at athensmusic.net for sending this out.

In 2006, the “Finest Worksongs” event celebrated the release of R.E.M.’s best of IRS years compilations with Athens bands performing R.E.M. songs.

Please note that the band will neither perform nor be in attendance at the event.

About the deluxe edition of Murmur:

The 25th anniversary of R.E.M.’s Murmur package features two discs and liner notes with essays from producers Mitch Easter and Don Dixon, among others. The first disc is a remastered version of the original album and the second contains a previously unreleased concert R.E.M. played at Larry’s Hideaway in Toronto a few months after the release of the album.
