In a disturbing bit of news yesterday, the Athens Banner-Herald reported that Nuci’s Space had lost the property tax ruling that it’s been fighting for a while now. The original decision, that Nuci’s was exempt from the tax due to its status as a non-profit, was overturned. Reasoning behind the Court of Appeal’s decision stemmed from Nuci’s renting rehearsal space, being rented for parties, weddings, etc.
Hopefully, if you’ve been reading the blog, you already know a bit about Nuci’s. The space was founded by Nuci’s mom as a haven for musicians seeking mental health care, music advice, and other services. Funds from renting the space out go towards that purpose. Hell, the founder just received the key to the city last week! Man…
I’m still gathering the details but you can bet that I’m not letting this one go. I’ll try to find out what is going on exactly and keep you updated, though it’ll probably be via Flagpole. I’m reluctant to post any legal ramifications yet due to not having talked to the parties involved. That’s coming up though.
I sit in the shadow of the steeple and watch people come and go from Nuci’s almost every day. People are hurting and the organization is there to help. The last thing we need to do is to hinder that mission.
