Fifth annual Athens Americana music festival featuring Athens’ finest Americana, folk, and bluegrass to be held April 18th-22nd at Georgia Theatre, Little Kings, and Highwire Lounge

Athens, Ga.— April 3, 2012— The 5th Annual Athens Americana, a celebration of local folk, country, and bluegrass music featuring Athens’ finest acts of the inclusive Americana genre will be held Wednesday, April 18th, through Sunday, April 22nd, at the Georgia Theatre, Little Kings, and Highwire Lounge in downtown Athens.

The festival will kick-off on Wednesday evening, April 18th, with two events at the Georgia Theatre: a free happy hour performance on the rooftop patio bar featuring Nashville singer/songwriter Andrew Combs and Dead Confederate frontman Hardy Morris’ new band project, T. Hardy Morris & the Outfit, followed by Athens Americana’s inaugural show at the newly-renovated Georgia Theatre with Athens’ legendary Bloodkin, up-and-coming Americana duo Shovels & Rope, and country singer Jonny Corndawg.

Other performers at this year’s festival include such celebrated acts as Shonna Tucker (former Drive-By Truckers bassist), New West Records’ The Mastersons (husband-and-wife duo and members of Steve Earle’s band The Duke & The Duchess as well as Son Volt), Dave Marr & Friends, Big C & The Velvet Delta, Corduroy Road, Adam Klein & The Wild Fires, Thayer Sarrano (Of Montreal), Atlanta’s The Whiskey Gentry, Borderhop 5, Ruby Kendrick, Athens’ longstanding blues band The Healers, Packway Handle Band side project Sans Abri, Kim Morgan & The Baxendales, Justin Evans, Old Smokey, The Charlie Garrett Band, and Betsy Franck. Grateful Dead cover band Bobby’s Shorts, featuring members of Futurebirds, will perform a rare set to close the festival on Sunday, April 22nd.

The event also features an open house and free guitar workshop by local master luthier Scott Baxendale at the Baxendale Guitar studio on Sunday, April 21st. Baxendale will speak about general guitar care, maintenance, and guitar set-up.

Tickets are $10 for opening night at the Georgia Theatre, $5 for the Thursday, April 19th, show at Little Kings, $10 for each of the Little Kings shows on Friday and Saturday, April 20th and 21st, respectively, and $5 for the closing party at Highwire Lounge on Sunday, April 22nd. Wristbands will be on sale at the opening night event at Georgia Theatre as well as at Little Kings, in advance of and during the festival, providing entry into all Athens Americana events from Thursday- Sunday, April 19th- 22nd. Wristbands cost $20, or $15 with a ticket stub from the opening night event at the Georgia Theatre.
