Every once in a while the good folks of Athens start digging into their archives and finding some real treasures from days gone by. I thought I’d highlight some of the fantastic finds that have come across my own radar as of late. Maybe you’ll find them as enjoyable as I do.
First up LORDS OF THE RING courtesy of Kevin Sweeney. I’ll just let him tell it:
A metal and wrestling event that was held at the 40 Watt club in 1996 or so. As far as I can remember, which isn’t very, it was conceived by Sean O’Keefe and mc’ed by Scott Munn. The first band is the Monsters of Metal featuring me, T. Ballard Lesemann, Stevie Wonder, and Edgar Livengood. We went on to invent heavy metal karaoke as far as we knew. The second band is Has and I regret that I don’t remember who was in this band. Does anyone? Then comes the still popular Land Speeder starring Andrew Vernon, Daniel Beynart and Chad Williams. And then back to our cover band. I’m the only one not wearing a wig and I’m wearing Kelly Noonan’s clothes as usual.
Please enjoy this glorious madness here:
Next up, Discogs tells the world what you, dear readers, already know. Pylon’s your favorite band.
If you happened to miss the great Peabody archives talk the other day with Keith Bennett, you can find it HERE. There is some phenomenal footage of the B-52s early days that you won’t want to skip out on.
The Athens Clarke County Library has an interesting look into the history of 140 East Washington Street here. While I mostly frequented it when it was Copper Creek, fans of the ol’ Uptown Lounge will want to read through for some good history on the place.
And lastly, just because, some Drivin’ N’ Cryin’.
