Well, January seemed to last forever, didn’t it? February is always a toss up for us at HQ, it either just sucks completely or goes by too fast too soon. Here’s hoping this one is a good short month with lots of amazing shows to see.
We don’t talk enough about our songwriters here since the proclaimed heyday back in the early ’10s but here’s a chance to rectify that mistake. Athens All-Stars Songwriters in the Round featuring Todd Cowart (of the Hushpuppies & Blank Canvas), Adam Payne (of Dangfly), Ben Reynolds (of Chickasaw Mudd Puppies & Workhorses of the Entertainment/Recreational Industry) and Joshua Walker, Brodye Brooks & Casey King (of Holman Autry Band) and Bo Hembree (Grassland, Diablo Sandwich & The Dr. Peppers) will be taking place THIS FRIDAY, February 3rd at Hendershot’s. This is a damn solid lineup, folks. Get some good mixed drinks while you’re there and tell ol Crazy Hendy I said hello.
It wouldn’t be an AMJ post without a mention of Pylon so please make sure you are aware that Pylon Reenactment Society is playing with Tears for the Dying and Go Public at Cine THIS SATURDAY, February 4th. I know Vision Video’s gotten a lot of attention from the national goth/postpunk scene but TftD have been going hard at it for a long while and are (in my opinion) even better. Tears is truly a treasure. But go see for yourselves what I mean.
I keep JUST missing my shot to see Bit Brigade so I’m hoping that I will finally get to watch the wonderkids in action with Mega Man II and DuckTales at the Georgia Theatre on Thursday, February 9th. There’s a lot more skill to pulling this kind of show off than most people realize. Go see a feat if you can.
[ETA] Shotgun Shells: A Celebration of Todd McBride will take place over three days and venues and feature a ton of artists that we all know and love. Catch one or all of the shows February 10th at the 40 Watt, February 11th at Nowhere Bar, and February 12th at Hendershots. Full lineup in the graphic below.

GOTH PROM. Cine. Saturday, February 11th. That’s the blurb.
If you need something a little darker and heavier, maybe wander over to Flicker on Friday, February 17th for Beast Mode, Giger, and Kettle to Wake. Usually metal and screamo type stuff passes me by but I’ve really been in a Beast Mode, uh, mode as of late. Good for getting some aggression out.
If you need more rock, Deaf Condors, Beer Piss, and Cardiel will tear Flicker down (not literally) on Tuesday, February 21st.
The facebook description for this Sasha Stray show claims “alternative” but I’m hearing more pop-punk. I guess if you’re trying to classify Stray with the other groups on the bill like Handholder and Social Creatures, that’s about as close as you can get. But each of these groups is pretty distinct and you’re in for a good night of tunes however you lean musically. Catch ’em all at the World Famous on Wednesday, February 22nd.
If you haven’t already gotten tickets for the Amy Ray Band (with opener Kevn Kinney), I would recommend doing so now. The localish legends are playing the 40 Watt on Friday, February 24th. I hope I don’t have to explain to y’all who these people are but if you don’t know, please do a google and enjoy the killer music they’ve put out over the decades.
Last up, but certainly not least, is Floral Portrait, Wet Meadows, and Kiran Fernandes, John Fernandes at Flicker on Monday, February 27th. A little bit experimental and a lot bit floral, this is quite the night for anyone looking for a nice new group of folk to listen to. Well worth the time and effort of getting downtown on a Monday night, ok?
Lemme know what shows you’re looking forward to this month and also maybe let me know if you like this format for monthly show highlights. Thanks!
