Local Action: February 2023 Edition

The shortest month is almost gone and it’s a little quiet but we’ve some pieces to pick up before March gets here. Let’s get to it.

Athens is currently reeling from yet another stunning loss, having just received news of Davis Causey‘s sudden passing. Davis was the first Athens musician I met, having been (I think) the step-step-grandfather of a childhood friend. He was a phenomenal person and one of the best guitarists this town has ever seen. Causey was most often found at Randall Bramblett’s side but played around with so many folk, he was a true one of a kind performer. He will be sorely missed.

A reminder that the deadline to apply to play an offical ATHFEST show is rapidly approaching. Get your materials together and in before March 1st, 2023. Details as always are at athfest.com.

Time to put up or shut up if you’re one of the many people who hated the little blue squiggles downtown. You can apply to create some art for the upcoming Classic Center Arena. From Online Athens: “ACCGov is seeking large-scale public art for the exterior pedestrian plaza, exterior wall and interior entryway, and the selected artists will work with government staff to create sculptures, murals and wall-mounted artwork.” Read more here.

Go ahead and mark your calendars for the Normaltown Music Festival, happening April 22nd and benefiting Nuci’s Space and the Boys and Girls Club of Athens. Kristine Leschper will be headlining the festival (located at Athentic Brewing). Expect more details on the lineup, etc. as Aubrey Entertainment gets it rolling.

And, as always, stay safe out there.
