Forward Forecast: May 2023

As we kick off the FIFTEENTH year of this here blog, we are ever reminded of how drastically our Athenstown changes during May. UGA’s classes and exams start rapping up this week and soon it’ll only be the locals and a few Maymester students wandering around. Businesses will close for a week or two for cleaning and updates, the temperatures will start to climb, and we will once again begin a fruitless search for someone with a pool to be friends with. Most relevant here: the music scene will take a small breath before the craziness that is Athfest. So here’s some chill pre-summer vibes for everyone to keep in mind this month.

Let’s kick off the month with some emo-rock and power pop from Eagle Scout, Elijah Johnston, and Nanocar. These three indie bands can be found at Flicker Theatre this Tuesday, May 2nd.

If you need something a little different, may we recommend the Museum Mix on Thursday, May 4th at the Georgia Museum of Art? Browse the galleries and enjoy the tunes from DJ Stella Zine. Best of all, it’s completely free.

The MaiKai Kava Lounge is apparently the place to be on Friday, May 5th. Some of the best local names in Hip-hop are sharing the bill on Cinco de Mayo. You’ll find Cardynal, RBXXX, Ellwin, Niño Brown, Killa Cabbi, Jaycee and LZYBU+ all ready to rock your world.

Athens Business Rocks returns to The 40 Watt on Saturday, May 6th. The beloved local event acts as a fundraiser for Nuci’s Space and features all your favorite electricians, plumbers, 40 Watt staff, bakers, and construction workers playing their hearts out in a Battle of the Bands style…uh…battle. Wave hi to your postman and vote for your favorites to win.

Enjoy some of the nice May weather on the Georgia Theatre Rooftop on Tuesday, May 9th with Annie Leeth, Freeman Leverett, and Rose Hotel. Grab a drink and enjoy the view.

Nuclear Tourism is releasing an album at The 40 Watt on Friday, May 12th. The incredibly entertaining garage rock group will be bringing along CDSM, Mx Lonely, and Coma Therapy for the ride. Sometimes you need a dose of just genuine, no strings attached fun and this lineup will be right there when you get the craving.

On Tuesday, May 16th get yourself to The World Famous for a heavy night of moshing, bobbing, and thrashing with McQQeen, Problems, Beer Piss, and Safety Fluid.

And that’s a good place to stop, halfway through the month. Check back again soon for more recommendations during our slowest month.
